I’ve been immersed in history thanks to the current war in Ukraine and the book I chose to read for more understanding on its recent past with Russia, Tim Snyder’s Bloodlands. It illuminates WWII on the Eastern front and how Stalin and Hitler officially and unofficially partnered to destroy everyone living in between Germany and the USSR, which is to say Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, and the Baltics (and the enormous population of Jews who resided there). It’s tragically enlightening. Every day there are new images of bombs and bodies in the street on every news outlet, with the number of atrocities adding up like it’s 1942. It’s impossible not to be affected no matter if I turn away from the news (and the history books) and binge watch nostalgic trash tv. It comes out in my work instead.
