My goods haven’t arrived; however, lots of snow has, and Amsterdam seems unprepared. Travel around town, already compromised by the lockdown, is almost impossible now. Getting time for my practice is further challenged by having all the children home all the time, and we’re all making each other a little crazy.
That said, I remain interested in the idea of generative design. For a long time, as a drawing practice, I’d do a page with a series of lines as a warmup sketch, and sometimes I’d take these sketches farther as a meditative exercise on line creating shape and movement. It occurred to me that these sketches that I’d previously written off as meditative exercises in hand control, actually have an interesting relationship to generative art. I did a new one today, purposely leaning into the places where my hand shook a little or got tired while moving the pencil across the sheet. Each line becomes an iteration on the last one, methodically creating topology. I’m going to continue these for a while because they’ve been an organic outcome of my drawing for a long time, and I like their resonance as generative work.
